Dubrovnik, Croatia

Ragusa, as Dubrovnik was known in the Middle Ages, emerged 1,400 years ago in the seventh century as a maritime trading area in the western Balkans and Adriatic Sea. By the tenth century it had become a major and prosperous international maritime trading center, near the rank of Venice, Ancona and Pisa. Today its old port hosts yachts and pleasure craft, but in centuries past this port would have been teaming with commercial galleons and caravels from every port in the Mediterranean and actively trading in goods from nearly every corner of the known world.
